Climate-based Decision Making for Flower Farmers

I’m looking forward to sharing out experiences with climate-based crop selection and season extension during a webinar with Cornell Cooperative Extension next week (December 8th, 12-3pm). You’ll also hear from Zach Spangler, an Agricultural Climate Resiliency Specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension's Harvest New York team. Our talks are part of a series of discussions on risk management in flower production.

Cornell Cooperative Extension has some interesting programs lined up over the next couple of weeks. When Cornell first reached out, we were thinking I’d be talking about growing under cover, but as we started to discuss our crop choices here, we decided that my talk and our experiences at Little Farmhouse Flowers would really fit nicely into a category that is centered on exploring how climate affects us here in northern New York and how we’ve elected to allow it to sort of steer our ship, rather than fight against it, so to speak.

This acceptance, acknowledgement, and appreciation for the species that are naturally inclined to survive and thrive in our harsh environment is informing what, how, and where we plant on our farm. And it has also helped us distinguish our work from that of our competitors.
