Why We Love Bearded Iris

Bearded irises are a favorite here on the farm. They come into bloom just as the bright pop of early spring tulips and daffodils are beginning to fade, and compared to those first spring flowers, bearded irises grace us with an intriguing, and in some cases, slightly more subdued palette. With their gorgeous ruffled petals and fuzzy caterpillar-like “beard”, they strike a seemingly impossible balance between regal and whimsical in a way few other flowers do.

They are hardy, which is important for us here in the Adirondacks, they tolerate poor soils and are relatively deer-resistant. The rhizomes multiply generously, making it easy to spread them around your farm or to give to friends and neighbors.

It’s easy to see why these are a favorite for us. And we want to share! Below are the varieties that we have available through our wholesale bulb company: Ampersand Bulb Co. Flower farmers can order now for shipping. Bearded iris like to settle in during the warm months before cold weather arrives. Get them soon, all varieties are moving fast, and some are nearly gone!

Plant bearded iris in sunny, well-draining beds. The prefer to planted shallowly, with the crown of the plant at the soil surface. In colder regions, some mulch may be added during winter months to insulate the plants. Remove the mulch in the spring to allow for new growth and good ventilation.
