Non-Wilting Botanicals for JUNE
I’m happy to be back sharing some beauty from our farm here on the Barn Bulletin. Thank you for taking the time to follow along. I invested some time this spring into one of my passions - photography. I’ve struggled to make the best use of my camera for flat lay photography here. A workshop with Clare at Poppy Bee Surfaces helped me turn the corner this spring. I came away from her program energized and excited to work with my new knowledge.
Today I put together my first intentional, thoughtful flat lay in a long time. It took time and energy to tinker with the elements, adjust and re-adjust the lighting, determine the framing and composition. But I loved every minute of it.
The following elements are being harvested now on our farm in USDA zone 4, northern New York State. These elements are non-wilting and smaller in scale - perfect for use in personal flower designs that have to hold up over a long day and different kinds of activities by the wearer. Elements included on our list:
hellebore (Bluestone Perennials hellebore collection)
peony dis-buds (cut and saved from dis-budding peonies)
hens and chicks (Swallowtail Garden Seeds: Sempervivum Winter Hardy Mix)
fritillaria meleagris seed pods (Dutch Grown)
allium nectaroscordum (Bluestone Perennials allium collection)
miniature roses (High Country Roses: Bridal Sunblaze)
mini carnations (Bluestone Perennials: dianthus collection)
Iceland or shirley poppy pods (Swallowtail Garden Seeds: shirley poppy collection)
allium roseum (Dutch Grown)
euonymus (Bluestone Perennials)
pennycress (self-sowing annual) - found by chance! We’re hoping to save seed and offer it this fall.
allium schubertii florets (Dutch Grown)
boxwood (Fast Growing Trees: boxwood collection)
These elements work well for us here in zone 4, northern New York State. I hope they can spark some ideas for you, too! As always, make sure that you are only adding plants to your operation that make sense for your situation. Our soil, watering, sun, temperatures, pests, and potential diseases can be very different from yours. Flower farming is not one size fits all!
